My Net Worth…

I’ve been tracking my net worth each month religiously since 2019 (I think I started earlier than than, but my spreadsheet only goes back that far so…)

Unfortunately, this blog is only a few months old and while I am nothing if not ambitous, I have no interest in trying to go back and recreate what happened each and every month for the past 5 years. Although as I write this, who knows – maybe I wlll?

Why would I choose to do such a crazy thing as publicly share my intimate financial details and decisions?

First, I was inspired by J Money at Budgets are Sexy, who published his net worth from February 2008 through 2019 when he became a millionaire and sold his blog.

Aside from this inspiration, where are my other reasons:

  1. Simple accountability.
  2. It keeps me motivated towards my dream of retiring within the next 5 years. Yes, you read that correctly.
  3. I’m hoping that in five or ten years from now, someone else will read this and be inspired to start their own journey towards financial independence (ideally one of my children!)

I can tell you after tracking my finances for the past 5 years that this is an incredibly cathartic and exciting exercise. If you aren’t already tracking your net worth, I highly recommend you do so.

While you can use all sorts of tools and software to accomplish this goal, I have been using a good old Google Sheet to track my numbers. The format itself has changed somewhat over the years, but the basic idea is that I have a list of each month with my total assets, total liabilities, net worth, gain/loss from the prior month, and % gain/loss. I also track the YTD gain/loss from December 31st of the prior year.

I had previously used a tool called Personal Capital, but I found that the numbers were not always accurate. I am currently playing around with Monarch Money as a budgeting tool, but because of my personal situation I’m finding that my budget is still somewhat in flux.

How to Calculate Your Net Worth

It is actually pretty easy to calculate your net worth. Take all of your assets, which could include your bank accounts, investments, retirement, your home, your car, etc. and subtract ALL of your liabilities (mortgage, credit cards, student loans, etc.). The resulting number is your net worth.

Pretty easy, right?

No. For years I excluded my student loans. Probably because it depressed me to include them because I thought I would never get them paid off. But then I realized they needed to be included, so I added them in.

So don’t cheat. Make sure you include all of your liabilities in this calculation. And remember, this is an exercise for you and you alone. And remember that no matter what, nobody cares about you and YOUR money as much as you do. So when it comes to making decisions about how to spend what you have, you need to do what is best for you first.

While I still use a spreadsheet to calculate my net worth on a monthly basis, I’m currently experimenting with Monarch Money. So far, like what I see. Use this link (affiliate) to get an extended 30 day free trial and save 50% off an annual subscription.

Ok, so hopefully some of this will help to inspire you.
